The exaggerated numbers reflect the number of feared dead versus the number of actual dead found in the aftermath of Katrina. Ten thousand body bags were ordered for New Orleans, only 800 or so bodies were found there. Same with 9/11 - up to 50,000 people were feared dead when the towers came down, but the actual number of fatalities was about 3300. And there's no way temperatures could drop to 70 million degrees below zero. Absolute zero is at 0 Kelvin (0° K), which is at -273.15° Celsius or -459.67° Fahrenheit.

References to The Day After Tomorrow Randy mentioning the movie title twice, his colleauges mentioning it a third time as they came in to explain the updated findings. But at that rate, 19,445 degrees per second, everything would be at absolute 0 in 14 thousandths of a second and there would be no atomic motion at all. Randy, Gerald, and Stephen straining thruogh the town in their layers of clothes parody those people who were running from the cold. Randy was under the impression that the ice age had already arrived.
